Houston’s Biggest Summer Reading Challenge Is Back — and This Year You Could Win a Bike or a Nintendo Switch

Houston Public Library’s 2026 Summer Reading Program launches May 1 with prizes, bilingual resources, and a free citywide adventure open to every Houstonian of every age.

Summer in Houston is long, hot, and full of possibilities — and the Houston Public Library just gave every family in the city a free, rewarding way to make the most of it. The 2026 Summer Reading Program, UNEARTH A Story, opens for registration on May 1 and runs June 1 through July 31 across all 44 HPL locations. It is free, it is for all ages, and the prizes this year are genuinely worth showing up for.

What Is UNEARTH A Story?

This is not your average library reading log. UNEARTH A Story is a citywide challenge that invites Houstonians to dig into books, complete reading challenges, and unlock rewards as they go — from the first page turned to the final prize drawing at the end of July.

The concept is simple: register, read, log your minutes, complete challenges, and earn rewards at every milestone. The more you read, the more you uncover. Grand prizes include bikes courtesy of CYCLE Houston, Nintendo Switch Lite consoles, and Kindle Scribe and Fire Tablets. Whether your child is a reluctant reader or a book-a-day kid, there is something on that prize list worth working toward.

Built for Every Houstonian

This year’s program places a strong emphasis on reaching Houston’s diverse communities. Registration materials, outreach, and participation options are available in Spanish, and HPL has partnered with trusted community organizations across the city to make sure the program reaches families who might not otherwise walk through a library door.

“We know how busy summer can get for families, but even a few minutes of reading each day can make a real difference,” said Sandy Gaw, Library Director. “This program is about making it easy and fun for people to stay engaged, build habits, and take advantage of everything the library offers. We want every Houstonian to sign up and be part of it.”

The youth Summer Reading Program is generously supported by the McGovern Foundation, helping expand access to reading, learning, and enrichment opportunities for children across Houston.

Why Summer Reading Matters

The research on summer reading is clear and consistent. Children who read regularly over the summer maintain and often advance their reading level, while those who don’t can lose up to three months of academic progress — a phenomenon education researchers call the summer slide. For families in Houston’s diverse communities, access to free summer programming makes a measurable difference in how kids return to school in the fall.

The library removes every barrier it can. No cost. No commute beyond a neighborhood branch. No equipment required beyond the book in your hands.

44 Locations Across the City

Houston Public Library is one of the largest and most comprehensive urban library systems in the country, serving 2.3 million residents across 44 public service units — including six Regional Libraries anchored by the Central Library, 28 Neighborhood and Express Libraries, three History Research Centers, four TECHLink centers, a Satellite location at the Children’s Museum Houston, and the Mobile Express outreach unit.

Whatever neighborhood you are in, there is a library close by — and all of them are participating in UNEARTH A Story this summer.

How to Sign Up

Registration opens May 1 at houstonlibrary.org/srp. Sign up early, start logging minutes on June 1, and keep going through July 31. The program is open to all ages — children, teens, and adults all have their own tracks and their own milestones to hit.
