Kick a Ball, Grab a Coffee: Houston’s Free Saturday Soccer Mornings Are Back at Discovery Green

Soccer Summer: Kicks & Coffee brings casual skills training, pickup play, and a coffee truck to downtown Houston every Saturday morning through July 18 — and it won’t cost you a dime

With World Cup fever sweeping through Houston this summer, there’s no better time to lace up (well, almost — more on that in a second) and get in on the action yourself. Now through July 18, Discovery Green is hosting Soccer Summer: Kicks & Coffee, a free, easygoing soccer session for kids and grown-ups alike right in the heart of downtown.

Here’s how it works, neighbor. Every Saturday from 10 to 11:30 a.m., running through July 18, you can drop by the park’s Jones Lawn for casual soccer skills training and friendly pickup play. The crew from Futbolito en el Barrio leads everyone through games designed to sharpen your skills and build a little World Cup excitement, so whether you’re a seasoned player or just want to chase a ball around with the kids, you’ll fit right in.

And true to the name, there’s coffee. Coffee Fellows, Houston’s electric-vehicle coffee truck, will be on hand with beverages and sweet treats for sale — so you can perk up before the games or reward yourself after. It’s the perfect low-key way to start a summer Saturday: a little exercise, a little caffeine, and those gorgeous downtown skyline views from the park’s biggest, greenest lawn.

One quick heads-up before you head over: organizers ask that you leave the cleats at home to help protect the lawn, so regular sneakers it is. The action takes place on the Jones Lawn at Discovery Green, 1500 McKinney Street in downtown Houston, with plenty of parking nearby and the Convention District Garage right below the lawn.

So round up the family, grab your ball (or just yourself), and come enjoy one of the best free deals in town this summer. With the whole world watching soccer right now, this is your chance to play a little yourself — coffee in hand, skyline in view, and not a penny spent.
