AUSTIN – The holiday season is a time for celebration, but safety should always come first, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). To ensure Texans have a joyful and secure holiday season, DPS and the Texas Highway Patrol (THP) are ramping up enforcement efforts and sharing crucial safety reminders.

Traffic Safety Enforcement Campaign

From December 22 through January 1, THP will intensify traffic enforcement as part of Operation CARE (Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort). Troopers will be vigilant for speeding, seat belt violations, impaired driving, and other traffic offenses.

In 2022, DPS reported issuing more than 108,400 citations and warnings during the holiday season, including:

  • Over 9,000 speeding citations.
  • 950 seat belt and child seat violations.
  • 2,303 citations for driving without insurance.
  • 731 felony and fugitive arrests.

DPS Director Steven McCraw emphasizes the importance of responsible driving:

“It’s critical that drivers stay focused, avoid distractions, and never drive under the influence. Let’s make this holiday season safe for everyone.”

Safety Tips for Holiday Travel

  1. Don’t Drink and Drive
Plan for a designated driver or rideshare service if consuming alcohol.
  2. Move Over or Slow Down
For emergency vehicles, tow trucks, and stopped vehicles, slow down or change lanes.
  3. Buckle Up
Ensure all passengers wear seat belts—it’s the law.
  4. Eliminate Distractions
Avoid using mobile devices while driving. Texas law prohibits texting while driving unless stopped.
  5. Monitor Road and Weather Conditions
Check road updates at Drive Texas.
  6. Report Suspicious Activity
Use the iWatchTexas app or call 844-643-2251 to report unusual behavior. For emergencies, dial 911.
  7. Stay Alert for Human Trafficking Indicators
Be vigilant for signs of trafficking, such as individuals showing a lack of control, appearing malnourished, or working in unusual conditions. Report concerns to 911 or the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888.
  8. Defensive Driving
Be cautious, especially in bad weather, heavy traffic, or construction zones.
  9. “Steer It, Clear It”
After a non-injury crash, move vehicles off the road to reduce risks and comply with Texas law.
  10. Vehicle Maintenance
Ensure your vehicle is road-ready and secure any cargo.

Holiday Safety for the Community

DPS also urges travelers to watch for potential signs of human trafficking and to report any concerns. As the number of people traveling increases, so do the opportunities to help prevent crimes and protect vulnerable individuals.

This holiday season, let’s prioritize safety on and off the roads. Celebrate responsibly and help make the season merry and bright for everyone.

Stay Safe This New Year’s Eve: Essential Tips From Texas Insider

As you gear up for New Year’s Eve celebrations, safety should be your top priority. Whether you’re attending a party, watching fireworks, or celebrating at home, here are essential safety tips to ensure you start the new year on a happy and secure note.

Travel and Transportation Safety

  • Avoid Drinking and Driving: Driving while impaired is dangerous and illegal. Plan ahead and designate a sober driver or use a rideshare service.
  • Plan Your Ride in Advance: Accidents increase during holidays. Arrange transportation to ensure you get home safely.
  • Check Your For-Hire Vehicle: Verify license plates and driver details before getting into a rideshare or taxi.
  • Share Your Location: Let someone you trust know where you are and your travel plans.

Fireworks and Home Safety

  • Store Fireworks Safely: Keep them in a cool, dry place to avoid accidental fires or explosions.
  • Test Smoke Alarms: Ensure smoke detectors are functional and batteries are up-to-date.
  • Mind Your Pets: Keep pets indoors, away from fireworks and party food or alcohol.

Personal Safety

  • Know Your Limits: Drink alcohol responsibly, stay hydrated, and avoid overindulgence.
  • Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Always know exits in case of emergencies and avoid secluded areas with strangers.
  • Secure Your Belongings: Keep your car locked if you leave it overnight, and retrieve it early the next day.
  • Don’t Leave Drinks Unattended: To avoid tampering, always keep an eye on your beverages.

Venue and Crowd Safety

  • Follow Venue Rules: Be aware of event regulations, including identification checks.
  • Park Safely: Reserve parking spots in advance, choose well-lit areas, and keep valuables out of sight.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you notice anything unusual, contact local authorities immediately.

Health and Community Awareness

  • Follow Health Protocols: If celebrating at home or in public, adhere to any pandemic guidelines in place.
  • Be a Good Bystander: Look out for others, and take appropriate action if you witness harassment or unsafe behavior.

By planning ahead and staying mindful, you can enjoy a festive and safe New Year’s Eve celebration. Cheers to a happy and healthy new year!
