CapMetro Upgrading Fare Payment System for Austin Rider
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

CapMetro is rolling out major upgrades to its fare payment system, bringing new technology to enhance convenience and efficiency for riders in Austin. Set to take effect on March 1, 2025, these changes will modernize how passengers pay for transit, making the system more user-friendly and accessible.

Key Upgrades

Enhanced Payment Options

  • Riders will soon be able to tap to pay using debit and credit cards, as well as mobile payment platforms like Apple Pay and Google Pay.
  • New contactless payment validators are being installed on select buses and trains.

Updated Transit Apps

  • The CapMetro App will be retired in March 2025.
  • Riders will transition to the Umo app for ticket purchases and the Transit app for trip planning.
  • CapMetro aims to integrate both apps for a seamless user experience.

New Reloadable Fare Cards

  • Existing plastic fare cards and passes will be phased out and replaced with reloadable cards.
  • Riders can exchange current passes starting in February 2025, with detailed instructions to follow.

Fare Caps for Digital Payments

  • Instead of purchasing 7-day and 31-day passes, daily and monthly fare caps will apply automatically to digital payments.
  • This ensures riders never pay more than a set limit, making public transit more affordable.

Expanded Retail Payment Network

  • Riders will have additional options to purchase and reload fare cards at participating retailers, as well as directly on buses and trains.

Ensuring Equity: Title VI Analysis

CapMetro is conducting a Title VI analysis to evaluate the impact of these changes on minority and low-income populations. The findings will be presented to the CapMetro board before final approval.
