Dragons have soared through the folklore of cultures around the world for centuries, from Africa to Europe. Whether portrayed as terrifying beasts like those in Game of Thrones or endearing characters like Mushu from Mulan, dragons have captured our imaginations and taken their place in modern storytelling.

But today, dragons aren’t just legends or on-screen creatures. They’re also celebrated in real life! To add some excitement to everyday life, Texas Insider has adopted National Dragon Day as part of its calendar of fun and quirky holidays.

In Texas, dragon enthusiasts can see two unique dragons that bring this mythical creature to life. Here’s where to find them:

1. “Fury,” the World’s Largest Stainless Steel Dragon

Location: Southlake, Texas (off TX Highway 114)
History: Unveiled in August 2021, Fury is a colossal stainless steel dragon sculpted by Dallas artists Brad Oldham and Christy Coltrin. This impressive work of art stands 28 feet tall with a 40-foot wingspan, making it the largest stainless steel dragon in the world. While it’s partially hidden by trees, Fury’s ultra-shiny finish makes it worth the visit.

Fun Fact: Southlake’s school teams are called the Dragons, but Fury resides outside school property and serves as a majestic landmark for the city.

2. Pyro the Dragon

Location: Paris Junior College, near the Eiffel Tower replica in Paris, Texas
History: Pyro is a whimsical and wide-eyed dragon statue that serves as the mascot of the Paris Junior College Dragons. Created by Daon Wall, a PJC alum and former president of the Board of Regents, Pyro has been a beloved part of the campus for decades.

Fun Fact: Daon Wall also designed the red cowboy hat that famously tops the Eiffel Tower replica in Paris, Texas.
