Hey Texas! Got some news that’ll make your grocery run way more interesting. If you’ve been dealing with flood damage and you’re on SNAP, you can finally walk into HEB and grab that hot rotisserie chicken you’ve been eyeing. No more cold sandwiches when your kitchen’s underwater!

YES! Hot Meals Are Now Fair Game (Through August 14)

Governor Abbott just flipped the switch for 26 more counties – your Lone Star Card can now buy hot, ready-to-eat food. We’re talking:

  • That amazing rotisserie chicken from the deli
  • Hot soup when you’re exhausted from cleanup
  • Prepared meals when cooking feels impossible
  • Basically any hot food at checkout

No paperwork, no hassle – if you’re on SNAP in these counties, it’s already working on your card.

New counties getting hot food access: Bastrop, Bell, Blanco, Brown, Burnet, Caldwell, Coke, Concho, Hays, Irion, Lampasas, Lee, Llano, Mason, McCulloch, Menard, Milam, Mills, Reagan, Runnels, San Saba, Schleicher, Sterling, Tom Green, Travis, and Williamson.

Already had it: Bandera, Edwards, Gillespie, Kendall, Kerr, Kimble, and Real.

Stuck finding food or shelter? Call 2-1-1 and hit Option 1 – they’ve got your back.

Plot Twist: Say Goodbye to Candy and Soda This September

Here’s where things get interesting (and maybe a little annoying). Come September 1st, Texas wants to block your SNAP card from buying:

  • Candy (yep, even that Snickers bar)
  • Soda and sweet drinks (Coke, Gatorade, energy drinks – the works)

What you CAN still buy: Chips, cookies, crackers, and pretty much every other snack. Go figure, right?

The state’s waiting on final approval from the USDA, but Governor Abbott’s already submitted the request. So this is probably happening.

What Real People Are Saying

“I get wanting healthier choices,” one Travis County mom told us, “but sometimes a Coke on a rough day isn’t a luxury – it’s just getting through the day.”

Grocery workers are already dreading the checkout conversations. Your card will automatically block candy and soda purchases, but explaining that to frustrated shoppers? That’s gonna be fun.

What This Means for YOUR Next Grocery Trip

If you’re in a flood zone: Get to the store and treat yourself to some hot food – you’ve earned it after everything you’ve been through. This emergency benefit runs through August 14.

If you rely on SNAP for those little treats: Stock up on your favorite sodas and candy before September 1st, or start budgeting cash for those items.

Feeling strongly about the candy/soda ban? Your voice matters! Hit up your local representative or follow updates at TheTexasInsider.com.

The Bottom Line

Texas is simultaneously making life easier for flood survivors while potentially making it trickier for everyone else. It’s like getting a gift card to your favorite restaurant right before they change the menu.

Whether you’re grabbing that first hot meal in weeks or stocking up on Kit-Kats before the ban hits, these changes are about to shake up how you shop.

Stay tuned – we’ll keep you posted on all the grocery store drama and policy updates that actually matter to your wallet and your dinner table. Because let’s be honest, somebody’s got to translate this government stuff into real talk!

Questions? Thoughts? Hit us up – we’re here to help you navigate this crazy policy rollercoaster.
