ALVARADO, Texas—What began as a family outing on Independence Day quickly turned into a life-or-death rescue when an off-duty Texas firefighter sprang into action after a boat capsized on Alvarado Lake.

Jason Horne, a firefighter and paramedic with the Midlothian Fire Department, was spending July Fourth on the water with his 12-year-old daughter when he heard cries for help from a nearby boat carrying nine people. The vessel had overturned, trapping three children underneath.

Without hesitation, Horne dove beneath the capsized boat. Working in murky water with limited visibility, he located and rescued the children one by one.

The first child, a young boy wearing a life jacket, was pulled safely from the water. Horne then found a girl who was unconscious and not breathing. Standing on the overturned boat, he immediately began CPR until she regained signs of life. He returned underwater once more and rescued a second boy who had become entangled in rope beneath the vessel. The child also had no pulse when he was brought to the surface, but Horne’s lifesaving efforts restored his heartbeat before emergency crews arrived.

Paramedics transported the children to a nearby hospital for evaluation. Authorities said none of the rescued children suffered life-threatening injuries.

The Midlothian Fire Department later praised Horne’s actions, saying his courage, skill, and selflessness reflected the department’s commitment to protecting others—whether on or off duty. While Horne happened to be enjoying the holiday with his family, his years of emergency training enabled him to respond immediately when every second mattered.

The rescue serves as a reminder that heroes are often ordinary people who are prepared to act when others are in danger. Thanks to Horne’s quick thinking and determination, three children who faced a terrifying situation on the Fourth of July were given a second chance.

As Texans gathered to celebrate Independence Day, one firefighter’s actions became a powerful example of courage, service, and compassion—values that continue to unite communities across the state.
