Every newborn arriving between July 2 and December 31 gets a limited-edition card marking America’s 250th birthday — a small piece of history tucked into the same envelope as the standard one, at no extra cost
Available to every baby born in the U.S. from July 2 through December 31, 2026. Issued automatically through the hospital birth registration process. Free. No application needed.
Well neighbor, if you or somebody you love is expecting a little one this summer or fall, here’s a small but sweet piece of news to tuck away. The Social Security Administration announced this week that every baby born in the United States between July 2 and December 31, 2026 will receive a limited-edition commemorative Social Security card — a one-time keepsake marking the country’s 250th birthday. In a state that welcomes hundreds of thousands of new Texans every year, that’s a whole lot of babies about to arrive with a tiny piece of American history stapled to their file.
Here’s how it works, and it’s about as easy as government news gets. The card looks and functions exactly like a standard Social Security card, with one small addition: the official Freedom 250 logo printed in black ink, marking that your child was born during the nation’s 250th year. No forms to fill out beyond what you’re already doing. No application. No fee. If you’re delivering at a hospital, birthing center, or with a licensed midwife, the same paperwork you fill out to register your baby’s birth is the same paperwork that gets the card in the mail. The SSA has been issuing Social Security numbers to newborns this way since 1987 through what’s called the Enumeration at Birth program.
“Freedom 250 is a celebration of America’s storied history and the monumental moments that have shaped our nation, including the creation of Social Security over 90 years ago,” Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said in the announcement. “The next generation of Americans born during this historic year will receive limited-edition Social Security cards bearing the Freedom 250 logo. Under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump, we are strengthening Social Security, improving service, and building an SSA to serve Americans today and in the future.”
A few important details worth knowing. The Freedom 250 designation is only for original cards issued through the birth-registration program during the qualifying window — July 2 through December 31, 2026. Cards issued outside that window don’t get the logo. Replacement cards and duplicates don’t get it either, even if your child was born during the eligible period. So if the card comes and it’s the one — hang onto it. Slip it in a keepsake box, next to the hospital bracelet and the first photo. There’s not going to be another one printed like it.
Now, the important part every parent needs to hear. Watch out for scammers. Any time the government rolls out something new — especially something that touches babies, Social Security numbers, or new parents who are running on three hours of sleep — the scam calls start almost immediately. The SSA is making a point of saying it directly: the agency will never call, text, or email you asking for payment to get this commemorative card for your baby. You don’t need to apply. You don’t need to pay a fee. You don’t need to give anyone extra information beyond the standard birth registration paperwork you’re already filling out at the hospital. If somebody contacts you claiming to be from SSA and asking for money or extra info to secure a Freedom 250 card, that’s a scam — full stop. Hang up, delete the email, and report it to the SSA Office of the Inspector General at 1-800-269-0271 or online at oig.ssa.gov/report. The commemorative cards are being produced at no extra cost to families or to taxpayers, according to SSA. More than 3.5 million babies are born in the United States every year, and Texas contributes a big share of that number — meaning tens of thousands of Texas newborns are about to become the only generation to ever carry one of these cards.
So if you’re expecting between now and New Year’s Eve, congratulations — twice over. Once for the baby, and once for the little slice of history that’s going to arrive right along with them. And if you know somebody who’s expecting, pass this along, especially the scam warning. New parents don’t need one more thing to worry about. This one should be easy.
