Turning Waste into Community Treasure
Across Texas, June 24 marks Upcycling Day, an international celebration honoring the art of repurposing everyday items into something new and valuable. From glass jars and wooden crates to forgotten appliances, Texans are encouraged to embrace the motto: “Old is gold.”

From Concept to Action
Coined in 1994 by German engineers William McDonough and Michael Braungart, “upcycling” refers to creatively reusing materials in their present form—think a wine bottle turned vase—instead of recycling by breaking them down. Over the past two decades, upcycling has sparked a global movement, amplified by online platforms and DIY communities.

Join the “Little Library” Initiative
In celebration of Upcycling Day, the Take Care of Texas program has partnered with environmental advocates to promote a hands-on, heartwarming project: building Little Libraries from household cast-offs.

The goal: turn unused items into community book-sharing stations that revitalize neighborhoods while supporting literacy. Participants are invited to register completed libraries with the Little Free Library network, a global nonprofit, and place them in public-access spots.

Materials You Can Upcycle

  • Bookcases or filing cabinets – paint them, add labels by genre or age, install a door, and voilà—prints for all.

  • Old appliances – once properly cleaned and cleared of hazardous components, mini-fridges or cabinets make cozy, protected book nooks.

  • Grandfather clocks, bins, breadboxes—even bike baskets or wagons can be transformed into mobile or stationary libraries—just ensure safety, durability, and visibility.

A Greener Texas
By repurposing these materials, Texans breathe new life into old items, reduce landfill waste, and contribute to cleaner air. Upcycling not only conserves resources—it also nurtures creativity and community spirit.

Why It Matters
Take Care of Texas ambassadors remind us: “The more we reuse, the less we send to landfills. Even a little acts of reuse helps.” Plus, books share wisdom not available online—old volumes may hold insights lost to digital age.

Upcycling + Literacy = Community Connection
This Augmented Upcycling Day initiative transforms recycling into storytelling. Whether you build a stationary or rolling library, you’re crafting a symbol of shared knowledge and environmental stewardship—one that might spark a lifelong love of reading.

Get Involved Today
Pull out that old plastic bin or defunct filing cabinet, unleash your imagination, and register your Little Library. Let’s turn our cast-offs into community beacons—because every recycled item brings us closer to a greener, smarter Texas.
