Lunch Like a VIP for Just $20: Houston’s Culinary Students Are Serving Up a Hidden Gem

Every Thursday through July 23, the next generation of Houston chefs is plating a multi-course gourmet lunch — and your $20 ticket helps fund their future

Thursdays through July 23 — 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. — HCC Central Campus, Culinary Arts Building, 1401 Alabama St., Houston. $20 per person, limited seating.

Lunchtime just got a whole lot tastier, neighbor — and a whole lot classier. Every Thursday this summer, the Houston City College Culinary and Pastry Arts Program is throwing open its doors and inviting you to one of the best-kept secrets in town: a thoughtfully curated, multi-course prix fixe lunch prepared and served by the next generation of Houston’s culinary talent.

Here’s the deal. For just $20 a person, you’ll be treated to a curated menu of delicious dishes, plated and served with the care and polish you’d expect at a far pricier spot. And the best part? Every dollar goes right back into supporting HCC students as they chase their dreams in the kitchen. It’s a feel-good lunch in every sense — you eat well, and you help launch a young chef’s career.

And don’t let the word “students” fool you into thinking this is amateur hour. The HCC culinary and pastry program is the real deal, accredited by the American Culinary Federation and led by some genuinely heavy hitters. The pastry side is taught by Chef Eddy Van Damme, a five-time ACF gold medalist whom the American and European press have dubbed the “Prince of Pastry.” The program has also drawn on connections to Houston culinary royalty, including James Beard Award-winning chef Hugo Ortega of Hugo’s, Caracol, and Xochi fame. In other words, the students plating your lunch are learning from some of the best in the business — and it shows on the plate.

There’s something genuinely special about dining at a teaching kitchen, too. You’re not just grabbing a meal — you’re watching tomorrow’s talent in action, getting a front-row seat as these students sharpen the skills that’ll one day land them in Houston’s top restaurant kitchens. The energy is contagious, the pride is palpable, and you might just be tasting the early work of a future James Beard winner.

A couple of quick tips to make it happen: seating is limited each week, so reserve your spot soon rather than counting on a walk-in. The lunch runs a tight hour, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., which makes it a perfect midday escape — fancy enough to feel like a treat, quick enough to fit a lunch break. And since it runs every Thursday only through July 23, you’ve got a handful of weeks to get in on it before the summer session wraps.

So gather a friend or a coworker, skip the same old sandwich, and go support some hardworking Houston students while you’re at it. A gourmet, multi-course lunch for twenty bucks that does good in the process? That’s about as tasty a deal as it gets. Reserve your seat and come hungry — these students are ready to impress.
