Fireworks over the beach and bay, a volleyball tournament, live music, and the warm Gulf water waiting for you — South Padre Island kicks off its biggest season of the year the last weekend of May.
There’s a moment every May when South Padre Island stops being a destination and becomes a feeling. That moment is Memorial Weekend — when the Gulf Coast shakes off the spring, the Entertainment District lights up, and thousands of Texans make the drive south to remind themselves why this island sits at the top of every summer bucket list in the state.
Memorial Weekend 2026 runs May 23 through 26 on South Padre Island, and the 34-mile barrier island at the southern tip of Texas has plenty lined up to make it worth every mile of the drive.
What’s Happening on the Island
The Memorial Weekend Spike and Splash kicks off Sunday, May 24 at 11 a.m. at Coco Beach — a beachside volleyball tournament that brings competitive play and beach energy together right on the Gulf. The Memorial Day Fireworks display over the beach and bay lights up Sunday night starting just past 9 p.m. in the Entertainment District at 211 W. Whiting Street — one of the most spectacular fireworks shows on the Texas coast, with the Gulf on one side and Laguna Madre on the other.
Live music runs throughout the weekend at venues up and down Padre Boulevard. Fireworks on the beach happen every Friday and Saturday night beginning the last weekend of March — which means Memorial Weekend gets multiple shows, not just one. The Entertainment District’s restaurants, bars, and shops extend their hours for the holiday crowd, and the island’s hotels and vacation rentals fill up weeks in advance.
Why South Padre Is Worth the Drive
South Padre Island is the only developed barrier island on the Texas Gulf Coast, and it earns that distinction with 34 miles of white sand beach, warm Gulf water, and a laid-back island atmosphere that makes even a weekend feel like a real vacation. The island sits at the southernmost tip of Texas — about six hours from Dallas and four hours from San Antonio — which means it rewards the drive with a place that genuinely feels far from the rest of the state.
The island is also one of the great birding destinations in North America, sitting along the Central Flyway during spring migration. If you’re making the Memorial Weekend drive, add a morning stop at the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center and Alligator Sanctuary on Padre Boulevard — the alligators and migrating warblers alone are worth the detour.
The 26th Annual Shallow Sport and SCB Owners Tournament, one of America’s largest saltwater owners fishing tournaments, runs May 7 through 9 at the South Padre Island Convention Center — an early Memorial season event that draws anglers from across the Gulf Coast.
What to Know Before You Go
Memorial Weekend is South Padre Island’s busiest weekend of the year. Book accommodations now — hotels and vacation rentals sell out weeks in advance. Padre Boulevard, the island’s main north-south artery, sees heavy traffic on holiday weekends. Arrive Friday to beat the Saturday surge. Bring sunscreen, reef-safe preferred, and plan to spend at least two nights to make the drive fully worthwhile.
