Forget everything you think you know about archaeology. This isn’t dusty professors in far-off places. This October, you can get your hands dirty discovering the incredible stories buried right in your own backyard.

Texas Archaeology Month turns the entire state into one massive treasure hunt, and you’re invited to join the adventure.

Why Your Kids Will Be Begging You to Go

Throughout October, the Texas Historical Commission coordinates hands-on activities and commemorative events such as archaeology fairs, demonstrations, presentations, museum exhibits, walking tours, and more across the entire state.

Think your teenagers are glued to their phones? Wait until they’re making ancient pottery with their own hands or uncovering artifacts that haven’t seen daylight since before Columbus sailed to America.

The THC distributes FREE interactive archaeology activity kits across the state, including ever-popular pinch pot kits that let families create pottery using techniques Native Americans perfected centuries ago. They’ve also got the new TAMazine—an archaeological activity book that turns learning into an adventure.

What Makes This So Special

Texas isn’t just big—it’s archaeologically rich beyond belief. Every shovel of dirt could reveal:

  • 10,000-year-old arrowheads made by the first Texans
  • Spanish colonial pottery from early settlements
  • Tools and jewelry that tell stories of everyday life centuries ago
  • Evidence of civilizations that thrived long before European contact

When you participate in these events, you’re not just learning history—you’re literally touching it.

Five Ways to Jump In Right Now

  1. Grab free materials – Request public outreach materials to use or share in your community
  2. Find events near you – Check the Texas Archaeology Month Calendar and Map to discover what’s happening in your area (some events include free pinch pot kits for kids!)
  3. Host your own event – Teachers, community groups, and museums can easily add archaeology activities to their October plans
  4. Volunteer – Keep an eye on the THC’s social media for volunteer opportunities to help make these events happen
  5. Become a partner – Visit the Texas Archaeology Month Partner Portal to get involved on a bigger scale

Your Weekend Adventure Awaits

This isn’t about sitting in a classroom reading about the past. This is about stepping into it. You’ll walk where ancient Texans walked, hold tools they made, and discover secrets they left behind.

Your neighbors will spend their October weekends at the same old places. You’ll spend yours uncovering 10,000 years of incredible Texas stories.

The best part? Many events are completely free, and the THC makes it super easy to get involved whether you want to attend, volunteer, or even host your own archaeology activity.

Ready to dig in? Visit the Texas Historical Commission’s website to find archaeology events happening near you this October, or check out the Partner Portal if you want to bring archaeology to your community.

Trust us—this is way more fun than scrolling through social media.
