Texas Gave the World Juneteenth — Here’s How to Celebrate It This June 19

From the birthplace of freedom in Galveston to Austin’s parade through Historic East Austin, Houston’s Emancipation Park, and celebrations in cities across the state — Texas honors Juneteenth bigger and deeper than anywhere else in America.

On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston and read General Order No. 3 aloud to the people of Texas — declaring that all enslaved people were free. More than two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had taken legal effect, freedom finally arrived in Texas. That day became Juneteenth — Freedom Day, Emancipation Day — a Texas-born holiday that is now a federal observance celebrated by millions across the country.

In Texas, Juneteenth is not a distant historical footnote. It is a living celebration, rooted in community, music, food, faith, and the ongoing pursuit of justice and equality. Here is where to be on June 19 — and the days surrounding it.

Galveston — Where It All Began

If you attend one Juneteenth in your lifetime, attend it in Galveston. This is where it happened. General Order No. 3 was read here. The first organized Juneteenth celebration in 1866 was held at Reedy Chapel AME Church — still standing, still central to the commemoration 161 years later.

The 2026 Galveston Juneteenth events mark the 161st anniversary of that moment and are anchored at Ashton Villa, where Granger’s order was first read, and at Reedy Chapel AME Church. The annual reading and ceremony commemorating General Order No. 3 at historic Ashton Villa is the most historically significant Juneteenth event in the country. A free, family-friendly festival with music, vendors, and community programming follows. The Al Edwards “Father of Juneteenth” prayer breakfast, a community march, and the Juneteenth Legacy Project’s mural programming round out a full weekend of remembrance and celebration.

The Juneteenth PastPort Journey — a self-guided experience across Galveston’s landmarks, stories, and spaces that shaped the path to freedom — is available throughout the season at visitgalveston.com. The 5,000-square-foot Reflections of Emancipation mural by Houston artist Reginald C. Adams on Old Galveston Square is a must-see regardless of when you visit.

Most Galveston Juneteenth events are free and open to the public. Events run June 19–21, 2026.

Houston — Emancipation Park and Beyond

Houston’s Juneteenth tradition runs as deep as any city’s outside Galveston. Emancipation Park — purchased in 1872 by Reverend Jack Yates and four other formerly enslaved community leaders specifically as a gathering place to celebrate Juneteenth — remains the spiritual home of Houston’s celebrations.

Juneteenth Houston anchors a citywide kickoff at Emancipation Park, organized in partnership with seven historic Black neighborhoods — Third Ward, Fourth Ward, Fifth Ward, Acres Homes, Independence Heights, Sunnyside, and South Park. Additional Houston events include a family-friendly festival with live music, DJs, art, BLCK Market vendors, food trucks, and fireworks at Discovery Green and Avenida Houston; the Black Heritage Society’s Original Emancipation Park Juneteenth Celebration; the Acres Homes Juneteenth Parade; Project Row Houses’ Juneteenth programming in Third Ward; a Third Ward Juneteenth celebration on Almeda Street with live performances and Black-owned vendors; and a free outdoor concert at various East End venues.

The Heritage Society at Sam Houston Park runs Juneteenth tours and events from June 6 through June 26 — including Juneteenth Tea Cake Tours and an American Revolution Experience exhibit grand opening featuring national speaker Michael Henderson on June 18 at 6 p.m. These tours celebrate the tradition of Juneteenth tea cakes and red punch with a deep dive into Black Houston history.

Austin — Parade, Cookout, and Community

Austin goes all-in for Juneteenth across multiple events this year — and 2026 marks a special year with the Austin Public Library celebrating its 100th anniversary at the same time.

The Central Texas Juneteenth 2K, Parade and Celebration runs through Historic East Austin and Rosewood Park on June 19 — a 2K run beginning at 7:45 a.m. on Leona Street south of East Martin Luther King Boulevard, followed by a parade with floats, entertainment, food and local vendors, and a full community celebration at Rosewood Park.

The Carver Kickback: Juneteenth Edition at the George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center takes place Saturday, June 20 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1165 Angelina Street — BBQ plates, live music, hands-on activations, and vendors in a free, full-site activation open to all.

The Austin Area Urban League’s Freedom Fest 2026 brings a Kid Zone, the Soul of the City Freedom Fest Sound Stage with local musical artists, food trucks, and service providers to East Austin. The Austin Public Library hosts a community cookout at its first branch location celebrating 100 years of discovery, learning, and creating.

Across Texas — Juneteenth in Every Corner of the State

June 19 is celebrated in communities of every size across Texas. Major confirmed 2026 Juneteenth celebrations include Galveston, Houston, Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, McKinney, Edinburg, Lancaster, Allen, Missouri City, Longview, Rowlett, Burleson, League City, and dozens more.

The McKinney Juneteenth Celebration on June 13 is one of the largest in North Texas. The Edinburg Juneteenth Festival on June 12 brings South Texas together in one of the region’s most joyful community events. Lancaster’s Best Southwest Partnership Juneteenth Celebration on June 13 serves the southern Dallas suburbs.

For a complete listing of Juneteenth events near you, check your local city calendar and parks department website — nearly every Texas municipality hosts something on or around June 19.

Why This Day Matters

Texas has a unique and profound relationship with Juneteenth. The holiday did not originate in Washington or on a battlefield — it originated in Galveston, on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico, when a message of freedom that had been delayed for more than two years finally reached the people it was meant to free.

Juneteenth is now a federal holiday — officially recognized in 2021 — but Texas has been celebrating it for more than 160 years. The red food and drink traditions, the family reunions, the community cookouts, the music, the prayer, the parades — these are Texas traditions first, and they are worth understanding and honoring alongside the celebration.
