A rodeo with mutton bustin’, Cory Morrow on Friday night, a Saturday morning parade, the crowning of Queen Melone, a dog show, a 5K, a carnival, and enough watermelon to feed Wilson County twice over — the Stockdale Watermelon Jubilee returns June 19 and 20.
There is a certain kind of Texas festival that no marketing budget could ever manufacture. It has to grow organically, over generations, out of a community’s genuine pride in where it comes from and what it grows. The Stockdale Watermelon Jubilee is that kind of festival — and it has been going strong since 1937.
First celebrated in 1937, the Stockdale Watermelon Jubilee is one of the oldest watermelon festivals in Texas, always held the third weekend in June. Nearly nine decades later, the whole town still shows up — and so does everyone within driving distance of Wilson County.
The 2026 Jubilee runs Friday, June 19 and Saturday, June 20 in Stockdale, about an hour east of San Antonio on US-87. All activities except the parade are held at beautiful Stockdale City Park.
A Town With Two Queens
The Watermelon Jubilee has two sets of royalty. Queen Melone and her court is the more formal tradition, while the Rodeo Queen and her court carry a western theme. The coronation of Queen Melone dates back to 1937 — and the Rodeo Queen tradition dates back to 1962. Both coronations are community events that draw families who have watched multiple generations of daughters crowned in Stockdale’s long summer twilight.
The 2026 Rodeo — With Mutton Bustin’
The Stockdale Chamber of Commerce has announced that the 2026 Watermelon Jubilee Rodeo will include Mutton Bustin’ — with 10 riders each night on June 19 and 20, along with alternates. The full Mutton Bustin’ rosters are set for both nights, with young riders from across Wilson County and the surrounding area competing for glory on Friday and Saturday.
This year also introduces a new addition: a Rodeo VIP Suite available for both Friday and Saturday nights. Availability is limited — contact the Stockdale Chamber of Commerce at (830) 267-0801 for information or to book the VIP experience.
The Music
Cory Morrow takes the stage on Friday, June 19 at 6 p.m. at Stockdale City Hall — the Texas red-dirt country legend whose catalog has soundtracked a generation of Texas summers. There is no better match for a June night in South Texas.
Saturday — The Full Jubilee Experience
Saturday is when the Jubilee hits its full stride. The parade rolls down Main Street at 10 a.m. — watermelon-themed floats, marching bands, costumed community members, and the kind of small-town parade energy that city festivals spend millions trying to replicate and never quite capture.
After the parade, Stockdale City Park fills with carnival rides, food vendors, craft booths, and the full afternoon of Jubilee activity. The Watermelon Crawl 5K gives runners a reason to earn their watermelon. The Jubilee Dog Show and Races brings out the community’s best-dressed pups — dogs in watermelon outfits, racing to the finish line in one of the most joyful and ridiculous competition formats in the state of Texas. It is exactly as wonderful as it sounds.
A seed spitting contest, the Queen Melone and Rodeo Queen coronations, and the full evening rodeo close out what is consistently one of the most complete small-town festival days you’ll find anywhere in South Texas.
Why Stockdale and Why This Festival
Stockdale sits at the center of Wilson County’s agricultural tradition — watermelon has been grown in this part of South Texas for over a century, thriving in the sandy loam soils and long, hot summers that make Wilson County one of the premier watermelon-producing regions in the state. The Jubilee began as a celebration of that harvest, and 89 years later it remains exactly that — a community coming together to mark the season, honor its heritage, and have an unreasonable amount of fun doing it.
“It’s a time when locals and visitors alike can connect, celebrate, and create lasting memories,” the Stockdale Chamber has said. That is an understatement of the finest order.
