Each year on January 6, Texas commemorates Sam Rayburn Day, celebrating the life and legacy of one of the most influential political leaders of the 20th century. Born on January 6, 1882, in Roane County, Tennessee, and later a proud Texan, Sam Rayburn dedicated nearly half a century to public service, leaving an indelible mark on American politics and history.

A Storied Career in Public Service

Rayburn was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1912 and served for an unprecedented 48 years and 8 months, including a record-setting 17 years as Speaker of the House. Known affectionately as “Mr. Democrat,” he was instrumental in shaping landmark legislation, including:

  • Emergency Railroad Transportation Act
  • Truth-in-Securities Act
