BOCA CHICA, TX – A SpaceX Starship rocket disintegrated minutes after launch from Texas on Thursday evening, scattering debris over the Gulf of Mexico and forcing flight diversions. The incident, described by SpaceX as a “rapid unscheduled disassembly” (RUD), marks another setback for Elon Musk’s ambitious space program.

Rocket Failure and Initial Investigation

The 403-foot Starship, touted as the world’s most powerful rocket, launched at 5:38 p.m. ET from SpaceX’s facilities in Boca Chica, Texas. Eight minutes into the flight, SpaceX lost contact with the spacecraft, which was carrying its first test payload of mock satellites but no crew.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has directed SpaceX to investigate the incident. The agency stated there were no reports of injuries and noted that normal flight operations resumed after brief airspace restrictions to manage falling debris.

Preliminary findings suggest a fuel leak increased pressure in the rocket’s upper stage, causing a fire that led to its breakup.

“Teams will continue to review data from today’s flight test to better understand root cause,” SpaceX stated.

The failure disrupted dozens of commercial flights, forcing reroutes and delays, particularly from airports in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Implications for SpaceX and NASA

SpaceX is analyzing the flight data to determine the cause of the failure. Initial assessments suggest a fuel or oxygen leak led to increased pressure in the rocket’s upper stage. Despite the setback, Musk expressed confidence that the next launch could proceed as early as next month.

The test flight aimed to evaluate upgrades to the Starship, including its ability to carry payloads equivalent to Starlink satellites.

SpaceX has faced multiple high-profile failures during its efforts to develop reusable rockets. Early Starship prototypes suffered several RUDs in 2020 and 2021 before the SN15 prototype successfully launched and landed intact in May 2021.

Other notable setbacks include a 2016 explosion on a Florida launchpad that destroyed an Israeli communications satellite, and a 2024 incident where the upper stage of a Falcon 9 rocket failed to place Starlink satellites into the correct orbit.

NASA, which has contracted Starship for future Artemis moon missions, reiterated the importance of rigorous testing. “Spaceflight is not easy. That’s why these tests are so important,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said.

Musk’s Response

Despite the setback, Musk shared a video of the debris field on social media with the caption, “Success is uncertain, but entertainment is guaranteed!” He also hinted that corrective actions could allow for another Starship launch as soon as next month.

SpaceX has stated that the Starship design incorporates significant upgrades over its predecessors, but the latest mishap underscores the complexities of developing reusable space vehicles.

The FAA must approve SpaceX’s findings and proposed changes before any further test flights can proceed. Meanwhile, NASA and other stakeholders will closely monitor SpaceX’s progress as it works to address the challenges revealed by this test.
